In a column on liar in chief Bill Ayers, the Nation's Katha Pollitt gets it almost right. Ayers lies when he pretends that the WeatherUnderground was created after the Townhouse explosion in which three bomb-makers were killed. The three dead criminals were part of the terrorist organization that Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn founded and were intent on blowing up a dance at Fort Dix (something Peter Collier and I first reported in our Rolling Stone piece on the organization). You can read that piece -- still the definitive history of the WeatherUnderground in Destructive Generation. She is right that Ayers lies when he says he didn't intend to hurt anyone and that the acts were just symbolic. And so forth.
Good for her. Of course she's only concerned by the damage Ayers' bad publicity has done to the anti-American left of which she is a charter member. What she fails to point out -- and everyone seems to have missed -- was that the terrorism Billy Ayers sponsored was not a Vietnam War protest (not that that would justify it). Ayers and Dorhn were still underground, still bombing in 1977 when Jimmy Carter was president. That's because they weren't anti-Vietnam protesters (the war was over for two years by then and America's pullout was four years in the past). What they were about -- what they said they were about -- was starting a race war in America (that's why they loved Charlie Manson because he was about starting a race war too).
Ron Radosh has been carrying on a one man campaign to set the record straight on Ayers. In his latest blog he takes on the latest Ayers panderer, Chris Matthews.
