Exporting Leftism By: Michael Tremoglie
FrontPageMagazine.com | Monday, April 15, 2002

A MAJOR METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT is accused by some black citizens of being racist. The city’s white politicians immediately request a study be performed to determine the extent of the racism. The study is conducted and a report issued. The report claims that the department is institutionally racist. It mentions that black men are stopped by police disproportionately to their population.

Sound familiar? What city do you think this is? New York, Los Angeles, Cincinnati?

The answer is London, England. That is correct London, England. Of all the things that we could export to the British, we export the one thing we cannot sell themliberalism. The same post hoc, antipolice, fallacious socialist rationality that is the miasma of American law enforcement is now in Britain.

After the murder of a black youth some black citizens in London complained that the police were not assiduous in their investigation. They alleged that the police were racist and that is why there was little or no investigation. A commission was appointed to study the matter of racism in the department or the "Met" as it is known. Chaired by Sir William Macpherson the commission determined that London’s Metropolitan police department wasguess what"institutionally racist." The Londoners did not need Macpherson’s commission. Anybody in the United States could have told you that the "Met" was institutionally racist. After all that is what every commission appointed by politicians states about every department in the United States.

However, the parallels with similar such commission reports in the United States become increasingly absurd. Recommendations made by Macpherson's inquiry include the obligatory recruitment of minorities for the Met, recording of incidents of racism and a proposal to make "stopandsearch" procedures "fully accountable." Macpherson implemented a procedure that officers file reports, detailing the ethnicity of the individual, on each stopandsearch case and present a copy of the report to the person involved.

Apparently, there is the usual disparity in racial representation regarding stopandsearch. A 1996 survey indicated that 14 percent of blacks reported being stopped by the cops more than once, compared to 5 percent of whites. English civil libertarians claimed the practice was a scandal. Amnesty International’s research contains the usual canards: police target the black community with practices such as stop and search; black people faced more serious charges similar crimes than whites; and were more likely to be imprisoned. What Amnesty International neglects to say is the same thing that civil libertarians in America neglect to mentionmost victims are black.

Macpherson is obviously the greatest importer of American racebaiting tactics in London.

As is the case in the United States, after Macpherson’s policy was instituted the Met greatly reduced their stopandsearch cases. And as is the case here in cities like New York and Cincinnati, the crime rate has increasedespecially among blacks. And as is the case in cities like New York and Cincinnati, the same politicians and activists that condemned the practice of stopandsearch are issuing condemnations about the lack of the practice. And as is the case in New York and Cincinnati, those complaining the most are black citizens.

This is the crux of the matter. If all one knew was the opinion of the media, socialist academicians, and selfanointed community activists, like the Reverend Al Sharpton, one would believe that blacks are antipolice. In fact, it is quite the contrary. Blacks are disproportionately the victims of crime. As such, they value effective law enforcement. Indeed, there has been cooperation between blacks and police in London. Operation Trident was a law enforcement program the Met implemented because of the increasing homicides in a black section of London. Trident cops investigated 74 attempted murders of blacks by blacks (most of which were shootings). Over 50% of the murders committed between April and November 2001 were of blacks by blacks.

Recognizing the need for more law enforcement Home Secretary Blunkett requested more personnel and even Prime Minister Tony Blair put into operation a policy of constructing more prisons. These policies are being implemented because the crime rate has increased dramatically in London.

Liberalism in law enforcement has the same results in foreign nations as it does in the United States and for the same reasons. Politicians who pander to these unelected, selfappointed community activists present the most deleterious effect to minorities. This is not to say that they have not benefited the community in some ways. However, their dogmatic liberalism has made their communities almost uninhabitable. The KKK could not have a more effective advocate than the socialists.
