“THE GROUND IS NO PLACE for a Champion,” said the Reverend Jesse Jackson. “The ground is no place that I will wallow on.”With those words on Saturday the Reverend Jackson announced that the penance he had begun on Thursday was at an end. The self-proclaimed “Champion” announced that he was washed in the blood of the scam and ready to return as the media-anointed moral leader of African-Americans. He declared: “I will not discuss that any further, any more.”
The “that” at issue was Jesse’s own equivalent of William Jefferson Clinton’s “that woman,” - Jackson’s mistress and his “love child” born to her 20 months ago at the time of the Clinton sex scandal.
Rev. Jackson’s mistress, who told the National Enquirer that “Jesse and I still have a very warm and close relationship,” is Karin Stanford, former head of the Rainbow Coalition’s Washington, D.C., office. Age 39, she was born one year before Jackson married his current wife Jacqueline, mother of five of his children. Stanford is roughly three years older than Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. Reverend Jackson, 59 - like Bill Clinton with Monica -- has a child nearly his lover’s age.
These lovers apparently became close in the mid 1990s when the former University of Georgia African-American Studies Asst. Professor was writing her aptly-named 1997 book Beyond the Boundaries: Reverend Jesse Jackson and International Affairs. Their affair soon bore fruit, and when Stanford, Jackson, and Bill Clinton were photographed in the White House in December 1998 she was four months pregnant.
At the time the Reverend Jackson was giving spiritual counseling to a sex-scandal-plagued President Clinton, his guidance came from intimate knowledge. Part of Jackson’s advice was to tell Clinton: “Keep your eyes open and your mouth shut. And don’t panic. If you respond with a contrite heart, that obligates [my emphasis] the public to respond with mercy.” Clinton took that advice, knowing Jackson to be a master manipulator who knows how to put the “con” in contrition.
In March 1999 Jackson announced that Stanford would be taking maternity leave for “the birth of her first child” with her lawyer boyfriend, as Tracy Connor reported in the New York Post. A week later, Jackson announced that he would not seek the 2000 Democratic Presidential nomination.
Involved with another man when she learned she was pregnant, Stanford filled in no father’s name on her baby’s birth certificate. As with Clinton and the stain on Monica’s dress, however, DNA testing confirmed that Jackson was the father. The baby apparently shares Jackson’s genetic trait for sickle-cell anemia. (Of course, in the case of Jesse Jackson, who at Havana’s airport once embraced Fidel Castro, turned to the TV cameras with a raised clenched fist and proclaimed “Long Live Fidel! Long Live Che!,” Jackson’s trait should more precisely be called hammer-and-sickle-cell anemia.)
Confronted with no plausible deniability, Jackson made provision to care for his baby and keep Stanford quiet. She and Jesse’s love child reportedly now live in Los Angeles in a $365,000 house. Reports vary as to whether Jackson is paying her $3,000 per month in child support or $10,000 per month. Early news stories reported that she also was paid $40,000 in “moving expenses.” On Friday the spokesman for Jackson’s Rainbow-PUSH operation told the press that the non-profit organization had paid her $35,000 -- $20,000 in moving expenses and a $15,000 advance on a contract to do consulting for it.
As Tonight Show host Jay Leno put it, Jackson’s mistress had “found the pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow Coalition.”
And a rather large, if secretive, pot of gold is there. Jackson’s organization has been criticized by this column, by David Horowitz, and by Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly for the amazing refusal to make any detailed public disclosure of its and Jackson’s income and expenditures. It’s clear that Jackson is quite wealthy, having fattened on government and private money given ostensibly to help “the poor.” His organization has gotten virtually none of the IRS scrutiny and harassment directed at conservative and libertarian groups critical of big government.
Jackson also has made a cottage industry out of intimidation and payoffs. Even liberal publications find his behavior greedy and grasping. “Is Jesse for Sale?” asked Peter Noel in New York City’s December 27th Village Voice, noting how Jackson’s willingness to do the bidding of big contributors on Wall Street was, in the word of Florida Democratic Congresswoman Corrine Brown, “shameful.” This month ultra-Lefties Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair in their fortnightly CounterPunch.com noted how Jackson muted his criticisms of General Motors and Nike when his organizations began getting large contributions from them.
And Pontefications was the first national column, in November 1999, to reveal that Anheuser-Busch - once targeted for boycott by Jackson - had suddenly given two of Jesse’s young sons its beer franchise for the entire city of Chicago. This franchise, with revenues of $25 million to $30 million per year was handed over to a 28 and a 32 year old with no experience in the distribution or beer business. Was this a payoff to avoid further Jesse Jackson intimidation? An odd precedent exists within the Democratic Party, I noted. The politically-powerful Kennedy family was granted government licenses to import vast quantities of Scotch as “medicinal alcohol” during Prohibition, and this helped create the Kennedy family fortune and a President named John.
John F. Kennedy, with what we now know was a relentless sexual appetite and taste for adultery, inspired a young imitator from a broken home in Arkansas named William Jefferson Clinton.
Scientists have found that when men attain positions of great power, wealth, or celebrity, their blood levels of the “male” sex hormone testosterone increase significantly. Sociobiologists speculate that women are attracted to men with wealth and power for good biological reasons: their own status and comfort are improved, and their children by such a father are more likely to survive and succeed, both because of his position and his superior genes.
Thus those men who succeed in their lust for power, wealth, or fame are easily tempted by lust. Their own sex hormone is surging, and at the same time women are powerfully attracted to them.
Like Clinton, Jackson - himself born out of wedlock, not knowing who his biological father was until around age six - modeled himself on an earlier leader and father figure. Jesse would later create powerful resentments in the civil rights community by pretending to have been much closer to Dr. Martin Luther King than in fact he was.
And like JFK, MLK was a man of great achievement and great sexual appetite that led him to adulteries too numerous to count. Writes DePaul University Religious Studies Professor Michael Eric Dyson in last year's bestselling book I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr., “King is said to have uttered during one of his sexual romps that ‘I’m f-king for God.”
Such megalomania, Dyson suggests, may come in part from being a minister, the ultimate hypnotic male figure of authority and success, “in the Black church - where women outnumber men three to one” and where, from his adolescence, the preacher’s son Martin Luther King, Jr., enjoyed “the tantalizing sexual treats of female surplus.”
Dyson depicts King as a sexist who treated women scarcely better than racist Southern Whites treated blacks, as inferiors who should stay in their place and be compliant. As King grew more and more distant from his enabler wife Coretta, writes Dyson, the renowned civil rights leader “established relationships of significant affection with three women. One of the women, in fact, had become King’s de facto wife, a spousal equivalent upon whom he became emotionally dependent as she replaced Coretta as the primary focus of her husband’s intimacy and affection.”
Dr. King’s right-hand man, Rev. Ralph Abernathy, in his 1989 autobiography And the Walls Came Tumbling Down revealed Dr. King’s penchant for group sex with prostitutes and groupies, the lighter-skinned the better. Dyson hints that King and Abernathy might also have had a homosexual relationship.
Having been close enough to witness Dr. King’s “compulsive sexual athleticism,” young preacher Jesse Jackson was apparently tempted to become a wolf in shepherd’s clothing.
His own sexual behavior soon stirred rumors rivaling those following Dr. King. During one of Jackson’s runs for President in 1987, when, as Jonah Goldberg notes, his “open marriage” was being discussed by U.S. News & World Report and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, his wife Jackie told reporters: “I don’t believe in examining sheets. If my husband has committed adultery, he better not tell me. And you better not go digging into it, because I’m trying to raise a family and won’t let you be the one to destroy my family.”
As news editor at the Leftist Salon.com Joan Walsh wrote in exasperation of this latest expose, “Jackson has no one to blame but himself. The civil rights leader’s womanizing has been legendary for years; he was a ticking sex scandal ready to explode.”
The people around Jackson’s organization were more than forgiving, in part because, as Jackson said haughtily on Monday, “When we…are contrite and admit errors, we put the burden back on others.” Instead of turning to the Reverend Jackson and saying “Jesse, what part of ‘Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery’ didn’t you understand?” or “Jesse, stay out the Bushes!” his fellow PUSHer and second-in-command Chicago Pastor James Meeks declared it suspicious that this story broke just as Jackson was about to rally Americans against George W. Bush. But of course Jackson’s sycophants and co-conspirators derive their power and money from their association with him. They will prop Jesse up no matter how morally hollow he becomes.
And ideological Leftists have no problem defending this aging socialist who has long served their agenda by fomenting racial division and hatred in America. Moreover, just as a co-chairman of the Democratic Party could proclaim Bill Clinton “the most moral politician I’ve ever known,” Leftists will say the same about Jackson and mean it. In their cosmology, the individual is nothing, the social collective everything. Clinton and Jackson practiced “social morality,” working to advance the power of the collectivist state. Their own personal morality compared to that means nothing - so if Clinton or Jackson were shown to be rapists, baby killers, or cannibals in their personal lives, this to Marxist collectivists is unimportant and irrelevant.
For his part, Jesse Jackson last Thursday issued a press release declaring: “I am father to a daughter who was born outside of my marriage. I love this child very much and have assumed responsibility for her emotional and financial support since she was born. This is no time for evasions, denials or alibis. I fully accept responsibility and am truly sorry for my actions.”
“But what action is he sorry for?” asked African-American columnist of the Washington Post William Raspberry. “For his sins before God? For breaking his marital vows? For having an affair with a woman who used to work for him? For having unprotected sex with her? For continuing the relationship? For disappointing those who look to him for political and spiritual leadership? Or is he primarily sorry for his personal embarrassment, the diminishing of his own political clout and the loss of the moral high ground? Is he sorry (as all of us would be) for getting caught?”
“Jesse has announced that he ‘will be taking some time off to revive my spirit and reconnect with my family before I return to my public ministry,’” wrote New Republic Editor-in-Chief Martin Peretz, “But notice that this invigorating spiritual journey did not come with the birth of his daughter. It came when the National Enquirer forced it on him.”
And that spiritual penitence scarcely lasted three days. Some conservatives have noted that Jackson could have behaved even more badly. Jesse supports abortion, but his mistress did not abort his baby. He did not resort to rape, intimidation, or lying, nor did he use taxpayer money - although his use of tax-exempt money merits investigation. But among the issues Jackson has not addressed in public: will this new daughter carry his name and a place in his will? What time has he allotted to be a father present in her life? How can he continue to put himself forward as a role model to young Black men in inner cities where almost 70 percent of children are born out of wedlock, knowing that, by glorifying himself, he is legitimizing more such socially-destructive, irresponsible behavior? Like Bill Clinton, Jesse seems willing to be a billboard before our children on which is writ large the message: “Cheating Pays!”
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. felt guilty about his immoral behavior, according to Dyson. John F. Kennedy was at least discreet in his sinning and avoided flaunting it. That was a time, before the expansion of the welfare state, when 80 percent of African-American children were born into stable two-parent families. Anybody here seen my old friends Martin and John?
Alas, we live in the age of Jesse and Billy Jeff Clinton, who think they are bigger men because they use and exploit large numbers of women. They have no morality or shame. Likewise, their ally NAACP head Kweisi Mfume, according to NewsMax.com reporter Carl Limbacher, “has several illegitimate children - all by different mothers.” And like Dr. King, Jackson, Rasputin-like, believes that by sinning repeatedly he is more noble than if he had never sinned at all. The moral: It takes a villain to beget a love child.
“Someone said a saint is just a sinner who got back up again,” St. Jesse modestly proclaimed on Saturday. “As a fighter, I’m determined I’d rather wear out than rust out.” Trouble is, St. Jesse is unwilling or unable to see that he has already rotted out - and his rot henceforth will infect and corrupt anyone and any society that follows him. The same St. Jesse who as a young waiter in a Carolina restaurant used to spit in the food served to White customers will not stop spitting his venom into America’s melting pot.
