Reparations Campus Campaign Update 04/01/01 By: Frontpagemag.com

Protests at Duke

Hundreds of campus radicals protested the Duke Chronicle’s decision to run David Horowitz’s anti-reparations ad. Campus police had to intervene when a group of protesters stormed the paper’s offices on Wednesday. But Chronicle editors and Duke administrators stood tall and defended the decision to run the ad. The Chronicle’s Greg Pessin said, "Open debate, open discussion, should not be sacrificed for comfort." And Duke President Nan Keohane, defended Horowitz’s right to speak. "The best recourse on a university campus is to use free speech to deal with speech that is offensive."

Horowitz Takes Texas

David Horowitz took his campaign against campus censorship to Texas A&M and the University of Texas on Wednesday. While in the Lone Star State, Horowitz once again had to speak under cover of an armed guard. "I had 30 armed guards at Berkeley. And there seem to be some here today," he said, noting a half-dozen campus police officers stationed around the auditorium at the University of Texas law school. "This is an outrage on a college campus." Read accounts from The Houston Chronicle, and the Austin American-Statesman, and the San Antonio News-Express.
