Improve Campus Climate: A Statement By: University of Wisconsin Madison
FrontPageMagazine.com | Friday, June 01, 2001

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED staff and faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have been concerned about the recent incidents on campus that are destructive to the university’s efforts to create a welcoming and respectful climate for all students. Symbols or signs long associated with hate and violence towards specific groups for their religious beliefs, skin color, sexual orientation, or any aspect of difference, have the power to hurt and intimidate even when these are purportedly used in cartoon fun. The publication of a paid advertisement, even one that denigrates and insults, is within the realm of free speech and protected as a constitutional right. In protecting and asserting such a basic freedom, however, we must also note that with our freedoms come responsibility and choice. Freedom asserted without care and thought for others can become destructive to the community and our joint humanity.

We will continue to work toward educating ourselves and all faculty, staff, and students on civil behavior toward one another and on asserting our precious freedoms conscientiously.
