They’re Melting! By: Tammy Bruce

If you thought Senator Tom Daschle’s nutty blitzkrieg against Rush Limbaugh and those who listen to talk radio was an off-the-cuff rant by a depressed loser, you’re only half right.

While Senator Daschle has plenty of losses to be depressed about these days, his comments accusing Rush Limbaugh and his audience (you and me and 20 million-plus other Americans) as shrill, violent emotional juggernauts ready to nail him and his family, was just an opening salvo. The new Democratic Party plan is not to bone up on the issues (as opposed to interns) but instead is taken right out of the Soviet playbook—Silence the Opposition.

When you think about it, though, it’s not a surprise. Information became the enemy when self-righteous Leftists drowned themselves in groupthink, paralyzing their ability to deal with issues. That’s why Roger Ailes and Rush Limbaugh and the good people at the Washington Times have become the new bogeymen for Democratic party leadership.

There is precedent for this. It’s called the Soviet Union, Communist China, and Castro’s Cuba, to name a few. Only state-sanctioned news outlets are allowed to exist in countries where Leftists rule because information is to them as water is to the Wicked Witch of the West. Information empowers, exposes, and is the foundation of freedom. We find out who has ideas, and who does not. We learn who cares, who is patriotic, who can deal with issues, and who can lead us in war. And because virtually every other mainstream news outlet is in the hip pocket of Leftists, Rush, Fox News, and websites like Newsmax.com and Frontpagemag.com present an exquisite threat to their control over what you see, hear and read.

The Democrats, after losing badly in November, realize they need to do something. After all, America is rejecting them. Of course, we silly voters like politicians who are proud of our country and live on the same planet we do. But, instead of facing up to the truth that they are in trouble because Americans have never much liked fascists, Democratic leadership instead has decided to attack information media which offer the people of this country an alternative to the Leftist Newzak (delightfully coined by Bernie Goldberg) spewed on broadcast television, CNN and in the New York Times.

While Daschle’s comments about Rush Limbaugh and his audience were insulting enough to all free-thinking Americans, I knew it was only the beginning. Enter Al Gore who went even further in his attempts to cast alternative points-of-view as actually dangerous and even treasonous. Here’s what Gore said to the New York Observer:

The media is kind of weird these days on politics, and there are some major institutional voices that are, truthfully speaking, part and parcel of the Republican Party…Fox News Network, The Washington Times, Rush Limbaugh—there’s a bunch of them, and some of them are financed by wealthy ultra-conservative billionaires who make political deals with Republican administrations and the rest of the media …. Most of the media [has] been slow to recognize the pervasive impact of this fifth column in their ranks—that is, day after day, injecting the daily Republican talking points into the definition of what’s objective as stated by the news media as a whole.

Let’s take a careful look at what this man has actually said. Many of you see the term "fifth column" a lot, but for those of you who don’t know, let me tell you the origin and meaning of that phrase. The term was originally coined by Emilio Mola Vidal, a Nationalist general during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). As four of his army columns moved on Madrid, the general referred to his militant supporters within the capital as his "fifth column," intent on undermining the loyalist government from within.

Al Gore knows this. He’s telling you and everyone else that Republicans and anyone with a so-called conservative point of view (which is pretty much everyone considering the only thing missing from the Left these days are Black Shirts) are betraying their country.

Now it is a Treasonous-Vast-Right-Wing-Conspiracy meant to make the Democrats look bad. Soon it will also involve soccer moms who have cocker spaniels. Let’s be honest here—this accusation is just silly.

Make no mistake, though—there is a fifth column out there. These are people during a time of war who sympathize and give aid and comfort to the enemy. They are not the Loyal Opposition who disagree with the status quo. They are people who claim, as an example, to be "peace activists," when in fact they’re nothing more than Palestinian and Radical Islamist sympathizers. These are people who give at the very least psychological aid and comfort to those who truly wish to destroy this nation.

By the way, one of those unnamed "wealthy ultra-conservative billionaires" Gore bleats about to the Observer is Fox owner Rupert Murdoch. Gore certainly wasn’t complaining about him in 2000 when Murdoch served as finance chairman for a huge fundraiser for Gore’s presidential bid. Murdoch even personally contributed $50,000 to the Gore campaign. This either makes Al Gore some witless patsy within the Very Scary Republican Fifth Column, or a self-serving hypocrite. Hmmm…

The legitimate and national news sources we have to counter the Rather-Jennings-Brokaw Axis-of-Bias have become the bane of every empty Leftist politician who relies on you being kept in the dark. The frenzy fronted by Daschle and Gore was launched because they feel the only way they can hold onto power is to control or attempt to shut down news outlets which don’t conform to their pointless-of-view. And they’re right.

Al’s and Tom’s and Bill’s and Hillary’s mistake, though, is thinking Roger Ailes, Rush Limbaugh, the Washington Times, and talk radio all stand alone ready to be fired or shuttered. That’s silly, but it’s okay—we’ll show them again in 2004 that selling shoes is the preferable career choice for all of them.
