Treason in Ithaca By: Joseph J. Sabia
FrontPageMagazine.com | Sunday, March 23, 2003

The Marxist-dominated Catholic community in Ithaca, New York has taken its hatred for America to a new level.  With members of the United States Armed Forces in harm’s way, representatives of the Ithaca Catholic Worker doused a local military recruiting center with human blood and called on our troops to engage in mass desertion.  According to a first-hand account of the event:

“[Members of the Catholic Worker] entered the [Cayuga military recruiting] office with jars filled with human blood which they poured upon the walls, door, bay window, on the flag, on the stand-up cut-outs of smiling military recruits, and over a body bag which they had brought representing the American soldiers who may die.”

These antiwar activists are traitors. Their blind hatred of the men and women who fight to defend their freedom is obscene.  If any of the blood they used in the attack is contaminated—as is likely given that the blood was donated by members of Ithaca Catholic Worker—these people should be charged with assault.

No prominent leaders in the local community—religious or political—have denounced these traitorous extremists.  Rather, most Ithacites seem to take pride in the fact that the activists took such action to convey their strong antiwar sentiments.

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) has not denounced the attack on the military, but has instead chosen to release a statement that echoes the protesters’ views:

“In just two years the Bush Administration has deconstructed the American economy, the nation's civil liberties, and our environmental protection... And now, contrary to International Law and against every decent instinct, we are engaging in what will come to be seen as a massacre in Iraq on the basis of the "Bush Doctrine" of preemption, which allows the United States to attack any other country anytime we want and for whatever reason the President feels is justified.”

A “massacre.”  That is how this Democratic congressman views our Armed Forces’ mission to disarm and liberate Iraq.  Is it any wonder that his constituents are dousing local military recruiting centers with blood?  He appears to be their ideological soulmate!

The day after the protesters were arrested for fourth-degree criminal mischief and trespass, The Ithaca Journal ran the defiant headline “Protesters stand by actions.”  This article was basically a puff piece masquerading as news, with no quotes from those who opposed the criminals’ actions.

If the story ended with the bloodbath, it would be bad enough. But the Ithaca Catholic Worker decided to take it a step further.  In a statement released entitled “Killing Cannot Be with Christ,” the traitors joined with other Christians around the country and encouraged members of the Armed Forces to desert:

“Brothers and sisters in the Military: Refuse to Fight, Refuse to Kill.  You are being ordered to war by a President who was never elected...You are being ordered to war by a nation whose self-acknowledged posture is that of world domination, mastery, and control....We bring our plea to you, sisters and brothers, in the armed forces.  Refuse to kill.  Refuse the order to go to war.  Leave the military before it is too late...If you choose to leave the military, please know that our homes are open to you.”

The Catholics who signed this statement acknowledge that their actions are in violation of federal law: “We knowingly and willingly make this plea to you in violation of 18 United States Code (USC) Sec. 1381 and 2387.”

18 USC Section 1381 involves “enticing desertion and harboring deserters” and 18 USC Section 2387 pertains to those who “interfere with, impair, or influence the loyalty, morale, or discipline of the military or naval forces of the United States.”

Violation of Section 1381 entails “fines under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”  Those that violate Section 2387 “shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.”

So, let’s bring on the Feds, slap on the cuffs and drag these people to the hoosegow!

Where is Congressman Hinchey on this?  Why isn’t he speaking out, defending the rule of law?  Apparently, he would prefer to get the votes of traitors and criminals than to uphold his oath of office.

Since the war began, we have been hearing endlessly from radical Leftists—including Rep. Hinchey—about how we must not infringe on the free speech rights of so-called conscientious objectors. Fine.  Americans do indeed have a First Amendment right to be unpatriotic.  But when antiwar Stalinists cross the line of peaceful protest, encourage military desertion, and pour human blood on military recruiting centers, they must go to prison for a long, long time.

Both New York State and the United States government should prosecute these criminals to the fullest extent of the law.  Not only do these saboteurs need to be punished, but a strong message must be sent to America’s internal enemies: Your treasonous acts will be not be tolerated, especially at a time of war.  We will hunt you down, we will arrest you, and you will forfeit your freedoms.
