The New Centurions By: Michael Tremoglie

C-SPAN broadcast the June 2 Federal Communications Commission (FCC) meeting about the proposal to change the rules allowing media companies to consolidate. During his remarks, Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein said he spoke “for the people” and claimed he was protecting democracy. When Adelstein mentioned he intended to vote against the FCC proposal he was applauded.

Before the meeting ended some of those same audience members who applauded Adelstein disrupted the meeting by chanting slogans about mass communication, corporate consolidation and democracy. One of them was Medea Benjamin.

How comforting it is to know that Medea Benjamin, apostle of Fidel Castro, a woman who thinks Cuba’s communist dictatorship is the paradigm of democracy, has appointed herself the guarantor of our democracy.

The FCC meeting was very convenient for Medea. She was in town for the “Take Back America (TBA)” confab June 4, 5, and 6 in Washington DC. Other FCC protestors spoke at the TBA conference as well. Jesse Jackson and Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (recipient of a Democratic Socialists of America’s award) were among them.

The conference, sponsored by the Campaign for America’s Future (CAF), is designed to help liberals change the Democratic Party to represent an even more liberal ideology than it does presently. Indeed, the website for the conference ominously informs people, “The right-wing politicians who now run Washington are out of control.”

According to CNS News.com, some of the TBA speakers’ philippics included:

*Jeff Faux of the Economic Policy Institute saying that callers to conservative talk radio are “drunks”

*Kim Gandy’s diatribe that millions of people think Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly “is actually telling them the truth about what is going on in the world.” Gandy, in a display of wit and maturity, called the MSNBC program Scarborough Country “ Stupid –borough Country.”

*Ralph Neas, president of the People for the American Way, said, “"We are going to block any right wing (judicial) nominee in the mold of (Supreme Court Justice Antonin) Scalia and (Justice Clarence) Thomas."

*Neas also said that the president is responsible for “one of the greatest constitutional threats to our constitutional scheme of government since the Founding Fathers.”

*Deb Callahan, president of the League of Conservation Voters, inveighed "This is undeniably the worst administration that we have seen in the history of this nation on [environmental] issues."

Laughably, after all this invective and vitriol about conservatives and Republicans, Wade Henderson, executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, claimed that "ideological extremism on the right" was making bipartisanship "impossible."

Robert Borosage, formerly a director of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), founded the Campaign for America’s Future. The IPS is the beneficiary of funding by the heirs to the Faberge cosmetics fortune. One of the heirs, Cora Weiss, consorted with the North Vietnamese and assisted their admission to the UN. Some of Borosage’s colleagues at the IPS were singer Harry Belafonte, who called Clarence Thomas a “house nigger,” and Bush-hater Katrina vanden Heuvel publisher of The Nation.

The Campaign for America’s Future is just one of many liberal think-tanks and activist groups that want to redesign America in their image. Currently, their main concern is that conservatives dominate the media. This ludicrous assertion reveals the myopia and parochialism of the liberals-the main reason they are unable to address the issues.

Liberals like Gandy, Neas, and Benjamin are so consumed with hatred of conservatives, and so fanatical in their ideology, that they believe they are mainstream. They actually believe that broadcast networks like CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, CNBC, and newspapers like the New York Times, Washington Post, and the LA Times are sympathetic to conservatives.

Liberals seem to talk only to each other and refuse to even consider the merits of a counterpoint. They are incapable of understanding that most people do not ascribe to their perspective. Consequently, they demonize those who do not concur with them.

The media presented the liberal perspective, uncritically, for so long those liberals are genuinely confused by the popularity of conservative media. They consider it a sinister plot. Although the majority of the media is liberal, they are not content. Liberals want a monopoly. They feel that any media other than liberal must be eradicated.

Anyone who doubts the value of the First Amendment need only attend the Take Back America conference. After listening to the invective of these new Centurions of our republic and their objective of purging dissent, you will leave thanking Madison and the other Founding Fathers.
