(This story in the UK Sun was written by Nick Parker, Michael Lea and Ian Hepburn)

PICTURES of Brit squaddies abusing an Iraqi PoW WERE faked, military experts said yesterday.

Uniform and kit worn by soldiers in the photos does not appear to be genuine.

Doubts were also raised over a RIFLE, a TRUCK — and the PRISONER himself.

The pictures have heaped shame on the Army. But one expert said: “I have no doubt these are staged.”

A string of clues were seized on by experts.

Military pundits listed TWENTY glaring mistakes or omissions in the pictures which pointed to them being faked or stunted.

The images, which caused a storm at the weekend, appear to show a hooded Iraqi being kicked, urinated on and hit with a rifle butt.

But one expert with 30 years’ experience said: “I am prepared to stake my reputation on my view that the whole thing is a set-up.”

Detailed analysis concluded that the rifle shown was a REPLICA of an outdated model, that the soldiers’ kit was WRONG and that images had been DOCTORED for effect.

Terry Foley, a former major in the British Army Intelligence Corps, said: “I am 110 per cent sure that the rifle in the picture is not a real British SA80. It’s far too shiny and clean and the colour and tone of the metallic parts are different to the real thing, which might explain why these pictures are in black and white.

“A shadow has been added to the so-called drops of urine on the image and the wet patch of the hessian bag on the victim’s head looks false.”

Mr Foley said he believed the rifle was a Japanese-made Soft Air replica of an original Mk I SA80 — not the modified version used in Iraq.

It does not have a sling fitted, which a front-line infantryman would have to keep his weapon close to him.

Other giveaways include all the people in the pictures being spotlessly clean, with no sign of ever-present Iraq dust. The “victim” shows no signs of flinching or blood.

None of the soldiers is wearing a watch or any badges denoting their unit or ranks. One wears a floppy slouch hat rather than the helmet and body armour patrols must wear.

Ammo pouches are empty and hanging open with straps undone. Trousers are tucked into boots rather than secured with elastic to keep sand out.

Army chiefs are probing the alleged torture of Iraqis by the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment.

A captive is said to have been beaten until his jaw broke and urinated on in an eight-hour ordeal. He was then dumped from a truck.

But the growing dossier of evidence last night suggested the incident may have been faked by tricksters out to blacken the name of the British Army.

The images have done incalculable harm and put Our Boys more at risk.

Ex-Army intelligence officer Simon Treselyan said: “I have seen enough interrogations to know this is faked.”

Tory defence spokesman Nicholas Soames said there was “clearly a question mark” over the photos’ authenticity.

The Ministry of Defence said: “We are as keen as anyone to find out what lies behind this story.”

  • A SECRET US Army report has found Iraqis were subjected to “sadistic and blatant” abuse by American troops at Abu Ghraib jail.

It lists claims of inmates being beaten and sexually assaulted with broom handles.
