California’s Peace and Freedom Party has just nominated a convicted, imprisoned felon as its candidate for President of the United States of America: Leonard Peltier. Peltier, a Turtle Mountain Chippewa Indian, was convicted of shooting two FBI agents at Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975. Peltier, 59, has been in prison for nearly thirty years.
This crackpot extremist party’s nomination of a convicted Indian murderer for president is a outrageous denigration of Indian people. This futile, ludicrous gesture, made by a tired racial agitation group with hackneyed socialist agendas, makes mockery not only of Indians, but of the state of California, and even of the American electoral process itself. They call the nomination of a convicted murderer “peace”? Their support for an imprisoned convict “freedom”?
What kind of group nominates a convicted Indian murderer for president, and why?
The far-Left Peace and Freedom Party, founded in 1967, has always used Indians to camoflague its political purposes. The mythical Mother Earth lore validates their environmentalist positions. Since 1974, the Party has been officially feminist and socialist (i.e., communist). Party activities have included countless labor union strikes and boycotts. Party people work against nuclear power plants, nuclear tests, “militarism,” and the rights of immigrant workers. The Party has played an active role in the “defense” of abortion clinics from nuns with rosaries.
The Peace and Freedom Party claims Leonard Peltier has been denied his rights from the beginning of his case. This is a common position on the Left. Such groups as Amnesty International, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, National Congress of American Indians, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Rev. Jesse Jackson, consider Peltier to be a “political prisoner” who should be released immediately. (Interestlingly, Bill Clinton, granted no pardon to Peltier, but to 140 others—including Marc Rich—who had made the FBI’s “most wanted” list.)
They claim Peltier is innocent, and has been abused by the government for thirty years. Therefore, he deserves the best position in life that America has to offer—the fame, fortune, and power of the Presidency. That’s the PFP’s idea of justice.
But their nomination is more than a juvenile protest. They want to insult America, so they seek to exalt an enemy of the United States to Commander-in-Chief. Peltier is their perfect candidate. They presume his Indian DNA validates their treason and grants them legitimacy. This nomination is a pollutant of American political space.
Is that all Indians are good for anymore, ‘extreme’ publicity, political expediency, and syndicated casino power, turned political? Indians are just tools to be used in the hands of the most adroit social, financial manipulators. Indians can always be staged in events like the Democratic National Convention, and featured as Democratic Party liners.
But the California Peace and Freedom Party’s use of Leonard Peltier is the apogée of pretense. The Party takes all Indians to be fools. The Peltier nomination is all about their individual careers as racial agitators, and money for certain minority “leaders.”
Peltier was part of the “hired” violence brought in to South Dakota in the ‘70’s, when inner-tribal conflict was at its worst. The American Indian Movement (AIM) asked Peltier to defend AIM members against Pine Ridge tribal leaders who wanted AIM terrorists removed from the reservation. AIM was newly created by the same communists who created the Black Panthers, the Symbionese Liberation Front, the Weathermen, etc., and advised by the same communist counsel like Kenneth S. Stern. Tribal leaders asked the FBI to intervene, and thus the circumstances were created that led to the murders.
Peltier has always claimed he did not shoot the two FBI agents. He has won a great following of far-leftists and outright communists, all who advocate the idea that Peltier is one of the greatest victims of racism and injustice in modern American history. He has become a celebrated writer and artist, and naturally associated with other Party “victims” like Mumia Abu-Jamal, the Black Panther who was convicted for killing a Philadelphia police officer.
“Peltier for President” is more ridiculous and insulting to Indians than anything these commies have ever protested before. Chief Illiniwek is dignified by comparison.
Oh yes, Janice Jordon is the Party’s nominee for Vice President. This makes less sense than Winona LaDuke’s bid with Nader in 2000.
What voters should ponder, though, is what it says about the Left that the biggest heroes in their pantheon are convicted murderers.
